Switchin' it up!

I've been a journalist with concentration in music journalism since I was 17 years of age... 6 years already! Most of my work has been published in both local newspapers and nationally-syndicated music publications. I am looking into expanding into doing other work outside of just journalism - writing band bios, and writing other press information. What I would love to do is get into some freelance PR with a record label or two, just to get some more experience.

Does anyone here have any experience in that type of work that can tell me how to get involved, what to do, or what not to do? I have a few PR agents that I've worked pretty closely with over the years, but I don't know if I should just be contacting the labels directly or if I could go through a PR firm. Does anyone have any advice on this? Thanks so much!
